MIMO complexity reduction through antenna selection

The capacity of a flat-fading wireless channel increases with the number of antennas used at both ends of the wireless link. However, the complexity of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) transmission algorithms increases coincidently. Transmitting and receiving over a subset of the available antennas is referred to as antenna selection. A signal strength based selection criterion is introduced. It provides half of the performance gain achievable through antenna selection and can be implemented without significant additional complexity. Antenna selection provides significant gains when the number of active antennas is close to the overall number of antennas.
